Remembering Marla

Marla Ruzicka, a model for us all, died from a suicide bomb attack, in Baghdad on April 16, 2005. Faiz Ali Salim, CIVIC's Iraq Country Director, was also killed.

I will let others who knew her better say more. From Kevin Danaher and Medea Benjamin:
"One of the things we can do to honor Marla Ruzicka is to carry on her heartfelt work to build a world without hunger, war and needless suffering. And every time we start to get depressed about the state of the world, we should take inspiration from Marla's boundless energy and throw ourselves back into the work of global justice with the same kind of passion that was Marla's most endearing quality."

Here is the poem I wrote in memory of Marla and Faiez.

    MARLA and FAIEZ

    You now are an example
    for the whole world
    For me
    of Humanity,
of what it means to love each and every one of us.
Your life is the ladder we should climb,
peaking at a place where warmth, determination and struggle
    Boil,
where our drive meets the sunrise often,
where we conquer fear as you have
driving on the endless airport road in Baghdad to the JAG
creating friendships among enemies, in a war zone
putting a true face to Resistance at home.
summoning power to the hands of victims
you both have conquered many, many fears
for yourselves, for so many others
    your mothers
you have stared killers in the face
    ones with guns,
    ones with power
and managed with Humanity, Dignity and Work to force change
in front of tidal waves of resistance
Over 28 MILLION U.S. dollars for Iraqi and Afghani Victims
    A tremendous Feat
that many of us strangle ourselves to accomplish
today, we have all lost someone great.
We must now have gratitude for what you have given,
and regrets for not supporting you
those in Power should be ashamed of what you've shown them
I now ask myself and others to Act fervently, everyday without stop,
    as you both have.
