California State Fair Madness
So last weekend, Thupten and I were minding our own business and eating corndogs at the Cal State Fair, when we stumbled accross this atrocity called "Folkways of Tibet," an exhibit celebrating "the 40th anniversary of the Tibet Autonomous Region" and depicting "China's Tibet." We agreed that it was pretty much the worst piece of propaganda we had seen in recent years, and decided to get a crew together to come up and do some educating. This morning, members of TYC, TJC, TANC, SFT, and the Bay Area Tibetan soccer team (represent!) braved the 104 degree central valley heat with banners and t-shirts (from the Alma and Chris martini sweatshop). The target was Cal State University Sacramento, who evidently sponsored the exhbit at the suggestion of Chinese alum without doing any fact checking on the content (you can take action and tell them to cancel this thing immediately by clicking here.)
Once everyone had taken their positions, the girl managing
the exhibit came up to Thupten looking pretty mortified (see right). Mortification quickly turned to tears when she saw how upset Tibetans were at the content of the exhibit. She said she had to call security, but promised to start an SFT chapter!!!Check out the Sacramento Bee tomorrow for an article and some photos of
the action. Here's Chris and Thup looking tough, followed by some fair cops in chino shorts throwing us out!
Feeling satisfied with our accomplishment, we spent the rest of the afternoon in the Bollywood tent eating fair food. Check out this photo of SFT love!More soon from the Bay Area...

¡Bay Area SFT presente!
Great job out there, and thanks for sharing the story on the blog. Can't wait to see the story in the Sacramento newspaper (and remember it's the hulking state of California's one and only capitol).
This is what we need lots more of - committed freedom fighters seeing an injustice and an opportunity, and taking action. Organized on shoestring and a moment's notice, this is grassroots leadership. Keep rockin. The SFT staff are gonna be up to our eyeballs in 'kicking off the new school year' madness but we still can't wait to make trouble. We need some more kickass folks like this Bay Area crew to be ready for Chinese President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit:
9/5 – Arrives in Seattle. Visits Boeing and Microsoft.
9/6 – Hu arrives Washington DC
9/7 - Hu & Bush “bilateral meeting” (as opposed to "state visit") at White House, DC. Asia Society to host dinner. Time and place TBA.
9/8 – Hu to address Yale University, New Haven, CT
9/9 Ottawa, Canada
9/10 Toronto, Canada
9/11 Mexico (?)
9/12 Mexico (?)
9/13 – Hu returns to U.S. (NYC)
9/14-16 – Attends UN General Assembly meeting

I am truly impressed by the quick and effective work by the guys in California. You are a real asset to SFT.
It just shows you that you never can tell what the Chinese government will do next, we always have to be ready.

Congratulations and a big heavy pat on the back to all of our freedom fighters in the Bay Area!!! The photos on the blog give a sense of how powerful the action was. Once again, the Tibetan community and the support groups have shown the Chinese government that we are EVERYWHERE!!! Special YAY to Alma, Chris and Thup.

Good job, guys. I talked to that same girl last Friday, and she didn't seem to have a clue about how offensive the "exhibit" was. Thank you for your prompt action and high visability. Hopefully CSUS will learn from this and we won't see a repeat.
